What's Your Favorite Chicago Gift Shop?

/ November 27, 2011 6:41 pm

After the turkey is eaten, there's one thing on everybody's mind: holiday shopping! While department stores, malls, and shopping streets are all great for getting gifts en masse, sometimes all you need is a single shop. When I need to pick up a little pressie or two . . . or a dozen, I always find myself stopping into paper shops like Greer and Paper Doll, where cards mingle with cute gift items, but Merz Apothecary and Space 519 are also two of my faves, both guaranteed to have an item to please everyone on your list. And I was recently introduced to Lincoln Square's Enjoy, An Urban General Store, which has a delightful selection of cute items and curiosities. This week we're doing things a bit differently on Pop 5, giving you a chance to vote for your favorite among our picks for the city's best gift shops. You'll determine who gets the top prize, so vote now!

2011 Gift Guide: Holiday Tips From Amanda Puck

/ November 27, 2011 6:36 pm

Gal-about-town Amanda Puck, the EVP of local PR firm The Experiential Agency (a national agency that counts Hermés, Marc Jacobs, and the Ritz-Carlton among its clients), a dedicated foodie, a former Crain's 40 Under 40 winner, and an undeniable Chicago tastemaker, gave us her holiday tips, on everything from shopping and party dressing to must-do local traditions. I wholly agree with Puck's sentiment that sequins always work around the holidays — although I'm not sure I've ever seen her without some sparkle. Keep reading for Puck's other picks to make your season bright.

Rest Stop: Black Friday Treats to Keep You Fueled Up!

/ November 25, 2011 9:30 am

While you're out taking advantage of all of those Black Friday sales, don't forget to take some time out to fuel up — and we're not just talking about a coffee break. Take a pit stop at one of these restos offering up a BF incentive that will help you keep more dough in your wallet for all those gifts and indulgences.

  • So what if you're not rolling around making snow angels anymore? Retreat back the simple days of your childhood at Tribute (800 S. Michigan Ave., 312-957-0000) with spiced hot chocolate and cinnamon twists, or spiked (or not) eggnog and ginger snap cookies for $5 each. If the lines of aggressive shoppers are leaving you fried like your Thanksgiving turkey, opt for the layaway cocktail, a blend of organic goji berry liqueur, prosecco, and grapefruit bitters; $6.
  • We're pretty sure there would have already been a line at Sprinkles (50 E. Walton St., 312-573-1600) even before the cupcake emporium announced its Black Friday special: buy one get one free! Opt for the orange-cranberry, pumpkin, and salty caramel, as there are only a few days left to enjoy these seasonally delicious flavors!
  • Black Friday is extended at deca (160 E. Pearson St., 312-573-5160) restaurant's deca den in the Ritz-Carlton, which is open for weary shoppers 2 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and until 6 p.m. on Sunday. Switch holiday gears and enjoy the game along with football fare such as sliders, hot dogs, flat breads, locally brewed beers, and cocktails.
