It's been a while since I've fallen in love with a shop to the point of wanting to move in and make it my home, but that's just the feeling I get from brand-new Bucktown pop-up Vintage Smith (2041 North Damen Ave.), located next door to another one of my faves, Roslyn. Full of rugged, all-American vintage classics for men, women, and even kids including flannel shirts, jean jackets, leather boots, and satchels, the shop looks like the kind of place a young Ralph Lauren would have loved, and lo and behold, owner Matt Smith is a former RL employee. Smith spent years shopping flea markets all over to create the shop's collection of classic denim from Levi's and Wrangler, vintage Frye boots, Woolrich cardigans, and the kind of worn-in tees that Urban Outfitters made a fortune trying to replicate. Vintage Smith is a pop-up, so it will only be around for a few months. I guess my imaginary lease, like the shop's, will sadly have to be short term.
