Pop 5: Chicago's Best Fro Yo

Welcome back to Pop 5! Last week we started our sweet series with the city's best cupcakes (the results are in!), and this week we're moving on to a less guilt-inducing dessert, frozen yogurt. While fro yo had its heyday in the '80s, in recent years, it's had a resurgence, only the modern frozen yogurt has more of a tangy kick and some serious health benefits (probiotics, anyone?). Yogurt spots have been popping up all over Chicago in recent years, and our fave five are below!

What's Your Fave Fro Yo in the City?

It's time again for our Pop 5 of the week! Last week we asked you about your favorite cupcakes in the city, and the results are in! This week, we're moving on to my personal favorite dessert: frozen yogurt. With the opening of two Pinkberry shops in Chicago, fro yo is more popular than ever, but the California import certainly has plenty of chilly competition from homegrown frozen yogurt shops. My old go-to Berry Chill has morphed into a sweet food truck (shown below), Forever Yogurt offers some awesome (and potentially dangerous) serve-yourself flavors, and the options just keep on coming.

Tonight's the (Opening) Night: Pinkberry Comes to Old Town

My love of Pinkberry has been well documented on this site, but now there's a second - and dare I say, more convenient - way to enjoy my favorite LA-yogurt import (Culture, you're still my fave local).

While the Old Town shop, located at 1533 N. Wells St., officially opens on Friday, the grand opening celebration is tonight from 5 to 8 p.m. Stop by before or in between your FNO activities, and you'll get a free small frozen yogurt. Considering the blocks-long lines for the State Street store opening, you can expect quite a wait for that freebie, but order new seasonal flavor PB + J (peanut butter fro-yo topped with organic strawberry jam and bread crumbs), and it will totally be worth it. It's seriously even better than salted caramel, and I didn't think that was possible.

Pinkberry officially open tomorrow at 11 a.m. The Wells Street store opens at 11 a.m. every day and stays open until midnight Sunday through Thursday and until 2 a.m. on weekends.

Food Truck Watch: My Fave Fro Yo Is Back!

Two things prevented me from totally mourning the loss of Berry Chill earlier this year. One, Pinkberry opened in its old State Street location. And two, I knew something that delicious couldn't be gone forever. Turns out I was right.

No, Berry Chill won't be opening any new stores. Instead, it's morphed into my new favorite food truck, Culture, The Yogurt Society, which just hit the road this week. Culture's yogurt is low-fat, about 30 calories per ounce, 97 percent lactose-free, 100 percent gluten-free, kosher, vitamin-fortified, and free of artificial chemicals. It's also full of probiotics and live active cultures, which they say can increase your metabolism, boost your immune system, and even freshen your breath, so why wouldn't you eat at least one a day!?

You can follow the truck three ways: on Facebook, Twitter, and on the Culture website, while includes a pretty adorable truck finder. The truck will offer two daily flavors, original and a rotating flavor (today, it's the yummy pomegranate blueberry). Like most yogurt spots around town, Culture offers toppings like fresh-cut fruit, granola, mochi, and cereals, including Milk & Honey granola. Expect to see more Culture trucks popping up around town, as the final goal is to have a yogurt fleet delivering the frozen goodness all over Chicago.
