Rebecca Taras | November 9, 2011 8:30 amI just returned from a blissful 10 days in Italy, Greece, and Turkey, and I'm already having a hard time getting back to reality — and that's not including the jet lag! While sites like the Acropolis, the Roman Forum, and the ancient ruins of Ephesus will forever change my perspective of the world, the food I ate — and libations I drank — have definitely impacted my palate. Being exposed to the real McCoy of international flavors and textures really comes down to one simple formula: fresh ingredients and simple preparation.Read More
Kate Stahl | October 5, 2011 12:00 amChicago is stuffed full (wink, wink) with pizza traditions, but nowhere will you find more history behind the pie than at Armand's Pizzeria. The original Armand's location opened in 1956, featuring thin-crust and pan pizzas along with traditional Italian dishes like baked clams. The menu remains mostly the same at the pizzeria's newest location on Western Avenue in North Center, where you'll still find the special sausage recipe developed by the owner's great-grandfather, who was a butcher on Taylor Street at the turn of the 20th century.Read More
Kate Stahl | October 4, 2011 8:30 amWelcome back to the Pop 5, featuring Chicago's best places to do anything and everything. Last week, we listed our favorite steakhouses in Chicago, and this week, we're still talking about our favorite savory spots, focusing on what is probably our city's most-loved food: pizza. This was a hard one, and because there are just so many great pizza spots in Chicago, I narrowed it down to thin-crust (or non-deep dish pies), which knocked out some of the local biggies like Giordano's and Gino's East.Read More
Kate Stahl | September 28, 2011 8:00 amWelcome back to Pop 5! Over the past month, we've been talking about all things savory, listing your favorite burgers, hot dogs, steakhouses, and barbecue. This week, we're wrapping up the series with my personal favorite (not that I'm that original): pizza.Read More
Rebecca Taras | June 14, 2011 8:02 amPizza is said to be one of those foods that is still good even when it's bad, but considering we come from a town known for its pies, we tend to be a bit more on the picky side. The recent opening of Roots Handmade Pizza (1924 W. Chicago Ave., 773-645-4949) has us wondering what hand-tossed Quad Cities-style pizza is.Read More
Kate Stahl | January 18, 2011 8:00 amThe great pizza debate continues: Chicago deep dish or New York thin crust? Lucky for us, we have it all in our city. And when it's New York-style we're craving, Santullo's Eatery on North Avenue is the best place to get it.Read More
Kate Stahl | December 6, 2010 8:01 amThere was a time a couple of years ago when you couldn't turn a corner without running into a new pizzeria, but with the rise of the burger, pizza took a back seat . . .Read More
Kate Stahl | November 9, 2010 8:00 amI've been dying to try Burt's Place in Morton Grove (8541 Ferris Ave., Morton Grove, 847-965-7997) since I saw No Reservations' Anthony Bourdain totally change his opinion on deep-dish pizza after eating here.
That was quite a while ago, but it took me until last weekend to finally make it there. And, like Bourdain (who I love, BTW), I'm now a deep-dish convert.Read More
